What is ashiatsu?

Ashiatsu is a type of massage where the massage therapist uses their feet to massage the client.  At Ashiatsu Sports Massage, we hold onto bars to provide stability to the therapist to allow them to angle themselves in such a way as to provide the type of pressure the client needs at the right angle.  It allows a massage therapist to massage much deeper and for longer sessions because it uses the weight of the therapist's body and center of gravity to relieve trigger points and chronic tension patterns much more effectively.  It is ideal for an athlete who frequently has tight muscles that require deep tissue massage to get into the deeper layers of muscle that is difficult to reach with traditional hand massage.  The therapist can use one foot or two, and can use only a portion of their weight or completely "stand" on the client for maximum pressure, depending on the needs of the client.  Silk socks and silk clothing can be worn to make gliding strokes easier and to provide extra modesty, or a sheet will be used for modest draping if the client prefers to use oil or lotion.  The client can be fully clothed in regular clothing if desired and can still get the full benefit of the treatment, but the massage may have more compression used rather than gliding strokes.
